Islamophobia is defined as the differential treatment, marginalization, and/or targeted disadvantages to Muslims or people perceived to be Muslims within an organization or institution. Institutional Islamophobia may be instrumentalized when organizations or institutions do not provide safety and security measures to address the needs of Muslim students who perceive or have realized violence and hate, including the threat of violence and hate, as a result of inaction and barriers within organizations and institutions. In this regard organizations and institutions should use their Muslim communities and representatives as guides and include them meaningfully in decision-making to address these problems effectively and beyond mere tokenship.
